The State Highways department has decided to widen the Thiruvellarai-Omandur Road in Tiruchi district.
The move would benefit devotees visiting the two temple towns in Tiruchi district, besides commuters travelling on the route.
Widening the existing narrow road has been a felt-need of the residents. The demand was raised under the Ungal Thoguthiyil Mudhalvar scheme too, sources in the Highways department said.
The department recently widened a 2.8-km stretch of the road from Thiruvellarai at a cost of ₹3.30 crore. The remaining 5.2 km stretch of the 8-km long road will be widened soon. The work, estimated to cost about ₹8 crore, had been sanctioned. The road would be widened from the existing 3.75 metres to a width of seven metres, the sources said.
N. Saravanan, a resident of Thuraiyur, welcomed the move saying it would be of much help to the public, especially students and devotees.
