A man who was shot Wednesday while being taken into custody by Saskatoon police was hit with several weapons-related charges when he made his first court appearance on Friday.
The charges include possession of a dangerous weapon, carrying concealed weapons and pointing a gun.
According to a police news release the accused, 35, was involved in an altercation at a Saskatoon home in the 200 block of Avenue L South. Then he took off on foot, reportedly armed with a machete and a handgun.
Police say the suspect still had the gun when they found him nearby, and he was wounded when an officer fired several shots at him.
The suspect was treated in hospital for nonlife-threatening injuries and then remanded into custody on Thursday, police said.
"Our officers are often called to unpredictable, dynamic situations where they must rely on their extensive training and make split-second judgments. It is fortunate that there was no physical injury to our staff members, and that it did not result in more serious injury to the suspect," Chief Troy Cooper said in a statement to the media on Thursday.
