Spurt in Maoist surrenders? 64 cadres, militia members from Chhattisgarh surrender
Amid intensified anti-Maoist operations in neighbouring Chhattisgarh’s restive south Bastar region, as many as 64 Maoist cadres and militia members from the Dandakaranya forest region have surrendered before the police in Kothagudem town of Bhadradri-Kothagudem district on Saturday.
With this, the total number of surrenders of cadres and militia members of the banned CPI (Maoist) in the tribal-dominated district has risen to 122 so far this year, police said citing rehabilitation measures, being implemented by the Telangana government, as one of the main reasons for the spurt in the surrender of Maoist cadres and militia members from the volatile Dandakaranya region, straddling Telangana-Chhattisgarh border, in the recent past.
The Maoist cadres and militia members from Chhattisgarh turned themselves in before the police in the presence of IGP Multi Zone-I, Hyderabad, Chandrasekhar Reddy.
Bhadradri Kothagudem Superintendent of Police B. Rohith Raju, and the officials of CRPF 81 and 141 battalions were present.
The surrendered cadres include one Area Committee Member (ACM), 19 Revolutionary People’s Committee (RPC) militia members, 11 Dandakaranya Adivasi Kisan Mazdur Sangatan (DAKMS) members and 6 Chetna Natya Mandali (CNM) members. Madkam Jimme alias Laxmi, 55, ACM, Agriculture Team, South Bastar Divisional Committee Member of the proscribed outfit, was among those surrendered.
Police said the Maoist cadres had quit the outlawed outfit, disillusioned with its ‘outdated ideology’ and ‘fast eroding support base’ in their erstwhile strongholds, to join the mainstream and lead a peaceful life.
