In a drunken brawl, a police constable, Muthukumar, was allegedly murdered in Usilampatti in Madurai district on Thursday evening. The body has been taken to Government Rajaji Hospital for a post-mortem.
Police said the 2009-batch constable, who was the driver for the Usilampatti Town Inspector, was off duty on Thursday. He went to a Tasmac shop located under Sindupatti police station limits with his cousin Rajaram.
Under intoxication, he had a wordy quarrel with a gang of people at the liquor outlet. After the quarrel, the constable and his cousin went to a farm under Usilampatti Town police station limits.
The gang followed them to the farm and another round of altercation erupted between them, following which the gang attacked Muthukumar with stones and an iron rod. The gang members crushed his head with a boulder, killing him on the spot.
Madurai Superintendent of Police B.K. Arvind inspected the scene of crime. Usilampatti police are on the lookout for the assailants.
