Ontario Provincial Police are urging drivers to take their time and stay safe on the roads and waterways this Canada Day long weekend.
Thousands are expected to hit the roads on the first long weekend of the summer to visit friends and family across the region. Police said they will be stepping up their presence on area highways, county roads, and lakes starting Friday afternoon.
"We want people to drive with respect. We're all out here, trying to get to where we're going as safe as we can," said Middlesex County OPP Const. Jeff Hare. "School came to a close yesterday, and summer vacation has started. We're all heading to cottages or getaways or baseball games or what have you. We all want to get to where we're going as safe as possible — and we all need to do our part in order to make that happen."
Hare said there will be an increase in RIDE checkpoints across the region over the long weekend.
"Don't drink and drive. Don't use cannabis, don't use any drug and drive," said Hare. "If you are going to indulge in some marijuana or alcohol this weekend, make the proper planning and be prepared. We are going to be out here."
In 2023, OPP reported 411 people lost their lives on Ontario roads. It was the first time the number of fatalities exceeded 400 since 2007.
As with the rules of the road, Hare said it's equally important for those who will be taking out watercraft on Lake Huron and Lake Erie to follow the rules of the water.
"Make sure you know the boating rules, make sure you've got your certified life jackets and again, don't drink and boat, and don't use cannabis and operate your boat. Be smart on the water," he said.
When it comes to making sure everyone arrives at their destination and makes it home safe, Hare said give yourself plenty of time.
"Pack yourself a lot of patience. Give yourself ample time. Make sure your car or your vehicle is set to go, and enjoy the journey. It doesn't have to be a race to get to where you're going."
