The two-day nationwide strike called by the Central trade unions against the ‘anti-people’ and ‘anti-working class’ policies of the Central government evoked partial response in the Union Territory on Monday.
Nationalised banks, BSNL and government-owned insurance companies functioned with less attendance. Transactions did not take place in nationalised banks due to the bandh call.
The offices of the territorial administration functioned as usual. The buses owned by the Puducherry Road Transport Corporation operated regular services.
The Confederation of Pondicherry State Government Employees’ Association held a demonstration near the Swadheshi Mill Complex to condemn the economic policies followed by the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance at the Centre. They condemned the move to sell profit-making public sector units to private parties. A section of BSNL employees held a dharna in front of its office on Rangapillai Street.
The Congress, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Communist Party of India, Communist Party of India (Marxist), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi and Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) have extended support to the total shutdown imposed by the trade unions in the Union Territory on Tuesday..
