Haryana girl Pooja wins heptathlon gold with national record at National junior athletics championships.
Haryana girl Pooja, the under-18 high jump champion, overcame a confusion in 200m that pulled her performance a bit overnight to aggregate 5102 points and claim the heptathlon gold with a national record on the penultimate day of the National junior athletics championships at the Kalinga Stadium here on Tuesday.
A good jumper, Pooja pushed herself hard to place third in the final 1000m race and pip Sriteja Tholem by 15 points in a neck-and-neck contest for her second gold.
Amid a bout of rain in the morning, Vinod Singh, an Asian under-20 silver medallist who secured the 10000m gold on day one, scripted another meet record in 5000m while completing the coveted double.
Top four finishers (Gaurav Bhosale, Vivek Chand and Vikas Bind) also went below the meet record. Another Haryana athlete Sanjana Singh, who trained for the upcoming All-India inter-university meet, clocked 2:46.45 to create a new national mark in under-18 women’s 1000m.
Bhavya Pilania registered a significant improvement to achieve 52.70m and upset title favourite and training mate Poonam in under-18 women’s javelin. National record holder Dev Meena was beaten by fellow Madhya Pradesh athlete Anshu Patel.
The top three, including Kuldeep Kumar, recorded an identical 4.90m.
