It took Natalie Merchant nearly a year to get her singing voice back after she had emergency surgery on her spine, and the singer-songwriter thought she might never perform again.
"My spinal column was collapsing into my spinal cord," the 59-year-old said. "I needed to have emergency surgery."
When she came out of surgery, she couldn’t sing.
