The opioid crisis is declining but still a huge threat. Former New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu shows how his state used billions of dollars in settlements to help address the problem.
When I took office in 2017, we had the second-highest opioid overdose death rate in the country. Since that time, our overdose death rate has dropped over 30%, while the national average continued to climb. Christopher T. Sununu was the 82nd governor of the State of New Hampshire. Before being elected governor in 2016, he served three terms on the New Hampshire Executive Council, representing 32 cities and towns in Rockingham and Hillsborough counties.
Every state has money to distribute. Since 2021, companies involved in manufacturing and distributing legal opioids, along with some pharmacies, have agreed to pay approximately $50 billion in total settlements.
