Month-long Karavali Utsav kicks off in Mangaluru

Dakshina Kannada District in-charge Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao inaugurated Karavali Utsav, the iconic festival celebrating the rich heritage of coastal Karnataka, on Saturday, at the Karavali Utsava Grounds here.

The inauguration was preceded by a procession by different cultural troupes of the region. The procession passed through Mahatma Gandhi Road before culminating at the grounds.
Mr. Rao said the festival, being organised in association with different academies in the region, would boost tourism in the area. Deputy Commissioner M.P. Mullai Muhilan, City Police Commissioner Anupam Agrawal, Zilla Panchayat CEO K. Anandh, Superintendent of Police N. Yatish, Deputy Conservator of Forests Anthony S. Mariappa, heads of Tulu, Beary and Konkani Academies and others were present.
Earlier in the day, Padmashree award recipients Harekala Hajabba and Amai Mahalinga Naik inaugurated the heli-taxi service at the Mary Hill Helipad by travelling in the helicopter.
Mr. Muhilan said heli-taxi attraction was introduced to add to the festivities. People can travel by helicopter to enjoy the beauty of Mangaluru and surrounding areas, including the serene beaches and riverfronts. The seven-minute helicopter ride, arranged by a private company, costs ₹4,500 per person.
The festival, that will go on till January 19, features different attractions, including the Beach Festival on December 28 and 29 at Tannirbhavi and Panambur beaches; robotic butterfly exhibition at Kadri Park from December 22 to January 19 between 4 p.m. and 9 pm; automobile and dog show on January 4 and 5; Yuva Utsav at Kadri Park on January 11 and 12 and the International Kite Festival on January 18 and 19 at Tannirbhavi Beach.
