A man has been arrested for impaired driving after driving the wrong way down a Toronto highway into a construction site and falling into a hole onto the road below, police say.
Toronto police say the man in his 30s was not seriously hurt and was outside of his vehicle when police arrived.
Duty Insp. Brian Duty Inspector Brian Maslowski, spokesperson for the Toronto Police Service, told reporters on Tuesday that the crash happened at about 5:35 p.m. The man was the only person in the vehicle, he said.
Police believe the man was travelling westbound on the Gardiner Expressway in a grey Honda when his vehicle smashed through a construction gate into a closed-off area and went through a large opening on the raised portion of the highway between Dufferin Street and Strachan Avenue, Maslowski said.
He said the vehicle went through a large hole, flipped upside down and landed on Strachan Avenue.
Maslowski said the construction site is only accessible through the eastbound lanes of the Gardiner Expressway.
"It's an incredible drop," Maslowski said.
"Thankfully, I can report, as I know right now, that there are no serious injuries."
Anyone who was in the area at the time of the crash, has dashboard camera video of the incident, or knows about the man's driving behaviour before the crash, is being asked to contact police.
