Futuristic Kia Syros compact SUV promises cutting-edge features and versatile powertrains
Kia Motors has once again made waves in the automotive world with the soft launch of their newest compact SUV, the Kia Syros. Positioned between the Kia Sonet and the Seltos, the Syros promises to carve its niche in the fiercely competitive compact SUV segment. Although pricing details remain under wraps, the unveiling has provided a wealth of information that highlights the bold design, cutting-edge features and versatile powertrains of this urban SUV.
The Kia Syros breaks conventional design norms with its polarising, cube-shaped architecture. At first glance, the vehicle’s compact dimensions — measuring just 3,995mm in length — might suggest a smaller footprint. However, the Syros’ tall-boy stance, expansive glasshouse and clever design elements give it a commanding road presence that feels much larger than its actual size.
The front fascia is a highlight, featuring a digital reinterpretation of Kia’s signature tiger-nose grille, inspired by the larger EV9. Complementing this grille are the star map LED DRLs and cube projector headlights, lending a futuristic vibe. The top variant comes equipped with stylish 17-inch alloy wheels, while lower variants feature practical 15-inch steel wheels. Chunky plastic cladding and contoured surfaces accentuate the urban-chic aesthetic, with a hint of Japanese-inspired design ethos.
At the rear, the Syros continues its futuristic narrative with star map lights integrated into the rear pillars and neat taillamps positioned in the lower bumper. The combination of these elements ensures the Syros stands out on the road, and whether you like it or not, you are not going to mistake it for anything else!
Step inside, and the Kia Syros greets you with a cabin designed for comfort, luxury and practicality. Dominating the interior is the trinity panoramic display, which seamlessly integrates the digital driver display, vehicle function controls and infotainment system. The use of premium materials throughout the cabin exudes an upmarket feel, complemented by thoughtful touches like rear AC vents, multiple USB-C ports and wireless charging.
Adding to the premium experience is a Harman Kardon audio system, delivering exceptional sound quality for an immersive in-car entertainment experience. The Syros also boasts a massive panoramic sunroof in its top variant, further enhancing the sense of space and airiness. The seats, designed with great attention to detail, offer excellent support and comfort. The rear seat, in particular, is a marvel of versatility, allowing for both recline and sliding functionality. This innovative feature enables passengers to prioritise either legroom or boot space, transforming the rear into a lounge-like experience. In addition, the rear cushion is ventilated for that added layer of convenience, especially in summer.
Under the hood, the Kia Syros offers a choice between two capable engines. The 1.0-litre T-GDI petrol engine delivers a spirited 120PS and 172Nm of torque, paired with either a manual transmission or a 6-speed DCT for those who prefer an effortless drive. For diesel enthusiasts, the tried-and-tested 1.5-litre CRDi engine churns out 116PS and a robust 250Nm of torque, available with both manual and automatic transmission options. These powertrains ensure a blend of performance and efficiency, tailored to diverse driving preferences.
