Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Pralhad Joshi said on Saturday that the Congress and other partners of Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance should answer why the DMK government in Tamil Nadu is opposing the Indian currency symbol ‘₹’.
Replying to questions from presspersons in Udupi regarding the controversy over the Tamil Nadu government removing the ‘₹’ symbol from its 2025-26 Budget documents, Mr. Joshi said that it was the UPA government which adopted the symbol. He said P. Chidambaram was the Finance Minister and A. Raja and Dayanidhi Maran were Union Ministers then. The rupee symbol was designed by the son of a former DMK MLA.
He said that the DMK and even the BJP did not oppose the symbol then. “But why the opposition now? Both the DMK and Congress should make it clear,” he stressed.
“The Congress and INDI Alliance partners, including DMK, have stooped to low-level politics,” Mr. Joshi said, adding that the DMK government rejecting the symbol was unfortunate.
Mr. Joshi said that the three-language formula had existed since Jawaharlal Nehru was Prime Minister. The Union government did not impose Hindi on others now. The Congress and its alliance partners are now misleading people on the revised National Education Policy by interpreting that the Union government is imposing Hindi on other states.
To a question Mr. Joshi said that the BJP high command will take a call on ending differences of opinions among some party leaders in Karnataka.
The Union Minister also addressed the party workers at the BJP’s Udupi district office.
