Minister inaugurates bronze statue of J.C. Daniel, father of Malayalam cinema, to preserve history and culture.
Minister for Cultural Affairs Saji Cherian on Friday inaugurated the sculpting of a bronze statue of J.C. Daniel, known as the father of Malayalam cinema, for making Vigathakumaran, the first feature film in the language. The 10-foot-tall statue, to be installed on the Chitranjali Studio campus in the capital, is being made at a cost of ₹50 lakh. Sculptor Kunnuvila M. Murali designed the statue.
Mr. Cherian said that Malayalam cinema and J.C. Daniel have played a key role in making Kerala a modern society. Daniel, who hailed from a conservative family background and P.K. Rosy, the heroine of Vigathakumaran, faced tough challenges due to the social situation of that time. The Minister said that by recording him in history, the present generation will be aware of the social atmosphere that prevailed in the State in yesteryears.
Daniel’s son Harris Daniel and officials of the Culture department and its various institutions were present at the function.
