Over recent years, the “Tush Push” has become a virtually unstoppable play for the Philadelphia Eagles, but could soon be banned if NFL owners vote against it at their annual meeting.
Over recent years, the “Tush Push” has become a virtually unstoppable play for the Philadelphia Eagles. The short-range play, which involves the whole offensive outfit pushing the quarterback a few yards, has been a key element in the Eagles’ success of late, helping the team win the Super Bowl this past season. But could we have seen the last of the “Brotherly Shove”? The future of the play will be decided on Tuesday at the NFL owners’ meeting when they vote on possibly banning the tush push after the Green Bay Packers submitted a proposal to outlaw it on safety and competitiveness measures. There is a plethora of other possible rule changes on the docket for the owners on Tuesday – including changing the overtime rules in the regular season, replay assist, wild card seeding and to make the new, dynamic kickoff rules which were trialed last year permanent – but the tush push is the one with the most attention on it given how it has changed the way many offenses around the league have operated. In order to pass any motion, there will need to be a 75% majority in favor of the rule change among NFL owners, with 24 out of 32 votes needed.
