Doha, Qatar: Indian Cultural Centre (ICC) felicitated India’s first Paralympic gold medalist and Padma Shri awardee Muralikant Petkar at the prestigious Ashoka Hall in Qatar. A true symbol of resilience, Petkar’s incredible journey - from serving in the Indian Army and enduring eight bullet injuries during the war to winning gold for India in the 1972 Paralympics - continues to inspire generations.
Nandini Abbagouni, ICC’s Head of Cultural Activities, welcomed the dignitaries and audience, while ICC Vice President Subramanya Hebbagelu expressed gratitude to Petkar for being an inspiration to Indian youth. Other members of the ICC managing committee, associate organization presidents, senior community leaders, and a large number of representatives from the Indian diaspora were also present on the occasion.
During his visit, Petkar interacted with the Indian diaspora, sharing his experiences and motivating the youth to pursue excellence with determination. Accompanying him was his son, Arjun Petkar, who is actively involved in nurturing young sports talent. He also shared valuable insights, encouraging the attendees to support and guide budding athletes.
The duo visited the 321 Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum, where Petkar’s remarkable achievements are proudly showcased. Expressing his heartfelt gratitude to Qatar’s Olympic and Sports Authorities, Petkar acknowledged the honour of being recognized globally for his contributions to sports.
