Heavy rain hits Salem district, Yercaud; Minister inspects damage, instructs officials; Namakkal district also affected.
Heavy rain lashed the Salem district, especially Salem city and Yercaud, on Monday night. Tourism Minister R. Rajendran inspected Yercaud Ghat Road on Tuesday.
On Monday evening, rain started to pour in various parts of the district, and during the night, heavy rain lashed Salem City and Yercaud. This continued till the early hours of Tuesday.
In the past 24 hours that ended at 6 a.m. on Tuesday, the Salem district received a total of 671.5 mm of rainfall, and the average rainfall was 41.97 mm.
Yercaud received the highest rainfall of 98.2 mm, followed by 94.3 mm in Salem, 63 mm in Aanaimaduvu, 59 mm in Attur, 47 mm in Omalur, 46 mm in Thammampatti, 42 mm in Danishpet, 40 mm in Gangavalli, 29 mm in Yethapur, 27 mm in Vazhapadi, 26.8 mm in Mettur, 21 mm each at Kariyakovil, Nathakarai, and Edappadi, 20.2 mm in Sankari, and 16 mm in Veeraganoor.
Due to heavy rain, rainwater stagnated at Salem New Bus Stand, Gupta Nagar, Angammal Colony, Ponnammapet, Ammapet, Kalarampatti, and Alagapuram. At midnight, Salem Corporation Commissioner Ranjeet Singh visited Gupta Nagar.
On Tuesday, residents of Ward 36 in Ammapet staged a road roko to prevent water from entering their houses. The Corporation Commissioner rushed to the spot and talked with them and pacified them.
In Yercaud, again a landslip occurred near the 40-foot bridge in the early hours of Tuesday.
