Former BJP leader P.C. George granted bail in Kerala hate speech case despite health concerns, facing multiple allegations.
Former legislator and senior BJP leader P.C. George was granted bail by the Erattupetta Magistrate court in Kerala in the hate speech case on Friday (February 28, 2025). Mr. George, who is 74 years old, was granted bail citing health reasons despite objections raised by the prosecution as well as the complainant in the case.
Mr. George, who was remanded for 14 days by the court on February 24, is currently under observation at the cardiology ICU of the Government Medical College, Kottayam.
The case against Mr. George was filed based on a complaint by the Muslim Youth League, which alleged that his remarks during a television debate on January 2025 were inflammatory and could incite religious hatred. He has been charged under Sections 196(1)(a) and 299 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Section 120 of the Kerala Police Act.
Mr. George had initially sought anticipatory bail from a sessions court in Kottayam, but his plea was rejected on February 6. He then moved the Kerala High Court, which also rejected his request.
This was not the first time that the former legislator has faced allegations of hate speech. In April 2022, he was booked for inflammatory remarks during the Ananthapuri Hindu Maha Sammelanam in Thiruvananthapuram.
Later that year, another case was registered against him for a communally sensitive speech in Kochi.
