The award is among the country's top honours, given to those "who make extraordinary contributions to the nation," according to the Governor General of Canada website.
The Governor General makes the appointments on the recommendation of the Advisory Council for the Order of Canada.
The three local appointees were among the 135 people announced Wednesday by Gov. Gen. Mary Simon.
Former senator Murray Sinclair and novelist Yann Martel were also named as companions, the highest of the honour's three levels, followed by officers and members.
The usual ceremony did not take place Wednesday and is expected to be held at a later date at Rideau Hall.
Dr. Mehran Anvari, a staff surgeon who specializes in minimally invasive techniques at St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton, was named an officer of the Order of Canada. He is among 38 other new officers this year.

In addition to founding and heading numerous organizations, Anvari has taught laparoscopic bariatric procedures for over 10 years in Canada and internationally.
The university website states he has won numerous awards including McMaster Innovator of the Year in 2009, the ORION Leadership Award in 2010 and the Order of Ontario.
