Former Georgia Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan, a Republican, criticized his own party and its love for former President Donald Trump, calling him a “direct threat to democracy” in his speech Wednesday at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
Duncan, a frequent Trump critic since the then-president tried to overturn Georgia’s 2020 election count — declared that the Republican nominee’s actions disqualified him from “ever, ever, ever stepping foot into the Oval Office again.
“If Republicans are being intellectually honest with ourselves, our party is not civil or conservative. It’s chaotic and crazy. And the only thing left to do is dump Trump,” said Duncan, a CNN political commentator who has endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 race.
Duncan, who likened the GOP to working “more like a cult worshipping a felonious thug,” noted that his attention was focused on Republicans and independents at home who are “sick and tired of making excuses” for Trump.
He acknowledged that he doesn’t agree with every one of Harris’ policy positions but praised the former California attorney general’s “prosecutor mindset” along with her potential as a leader in the White House.
