The former Democratic senator also issued a scathing summary of what the GOP has become.
Former Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) on Wednesday explained why she believes the endorsement of former President Donald Trump by his onetime GOP primary rivals at the Republican National Convention is all the more excruciating for them this time around.
“It’s not unusual for vanquished primary candidates to rally around the nominee, what is unusual is how personal the criticism” of Trump was during the 2024 Republican primary process, noted MSNBC’s Willie Geist on Wednesday’s broadcast of “Morning Joe.”
It “feels so much more humiliating for the people who are doing this, whether it’s [Florida Gov. Ron] DeSantis or [former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki] Haley, just because you know the depth of their dislike for Donald Trump,” agreed McCaskill, a political analyst for the network.
Haley and DeSantis both delivered speeches backing Trump during the Republican National Convention, which is taking place this week in Milwaukee.
But “it’s the Trump party now, there’s nothing Republican about it,” she later added.
