62-year-old farmer attacked by bear near Khanapur, Belagavi; leg amputated, saved by doctors, rescued after hours in wilderness.
A 62-year-old farmer has said that he was attacked by a bear in Mana village near Khanapur of Belagavi district on Monday. Doctors saved him after amputating his leg.
Sakharam Gavankar and his wife were going to their field at the edge of the forest, when a bear chased them.
He managed to help his wife climb a tree, but he couldn’t do so in time.
The bear dragged him by the leg and threw him down. It dragged him for a few metres and he escaped from its clutches by attacking it with a machete that he was carrying.
His leg started bleeding profusely when he called his son on his mobile phone and sought help.
However, locating him in the wilderness proved difficult.
A team led by police personnel, the victim’s family members and some neighbours took a few hours to spot them and rescue them.
