The Federal Aviation Administration announced Monday that it will be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America” in its next update of charts and maps.
The FAA also said it would be changing the name of Denali, the highest peak in North America, back to Mt. McKinley.
The two-sentence release didn’t explain the name changes but said they would be targeted for the next publication cycle.
A month ago, President Donald Trump declared he wanted to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico because “it’s ours.”
Google subsequently agreed to use the “Gulf of America” designation once the federal government updates its official maps.
