Dedniel Núñez sent to Triple-A for start of Mets season after slow spring buildup

PORT ST. LUCIE — Dedniel Núñez’s late start to the Grapefruit League season has translated into a minor league ticket.
The right-handed reliever was optioned Sunday to Triple-A Syracuse, where he will continue his buildup for later consideration as an addition to the Mets bullpen.
Núñez has appeared in only two games this spring and team officials didn’t want to rush him back.
The slow buildup for Núñez followed his absence from the team late last season with forearm tightness.
At Syracuse, the goal is to get Núñez pitching on consecutive days and beyond one inning.
“That’s the right thing to do here, especially when we are talking about a guy that had some elbow issues last year and it’s not fair after just a couple of outings to ask him … when he is not ready,” Mendoza said. “He is going to go down to Triple-A and we want to build him up.”
