Court clears way for Illinois to become first state to eradicate cash bail
Fox News
The Illinois State Supreme Court upheld a provision in the SAFE-T Act that eliminates cash bail. The law is set to take effect on Sept. 18.
Under the new law, judges will not require suspects charged with crimes to post bail in order to leave jail while they await trial. Suspects deemed a threat to the public or those who are likely to flee can still be required to remain in jail, CBS News reported.
The state Supreme Court's ruling means the end to cash bail will take effect across the state beginning Sept. 18. Other states have enacted reforms abolishing cash bail for many cases, though Illinois is expected to be the first state to eliminate cash bail, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
