B. Seetha, councillor of Ward No. 39, has urged the officials of the Tirunelveli City Corporation to put up fence around 80 cents of land, worth about ₹16 crore, near Bombay Theatre as it had been retrieved from a few powerful encroachers.
In the petition submitted to Mayor G. Ramakrishnan on Tuesday, Ms. Seetha said a children’s park was created by the on the land. However, this children’s park was illegally occupied by a few individuals with the help of senior officials in the Department of Revenue. When he came to know about the encroachers and their motive behind occupying the Corporation’s land, the then Mayor A.L. Subramanian took steps to evict them with the help of the police.
As the encroachers filed a case before the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court, they were asked on July 14, 2021, to approach the civil court here. Since the encroachers were yet to file any case before the civil court, the Corporation should erect fence around 80 cents of land, worth about ₹16 crore now, Ms. Seetha said.
Councillor S. Kandan of Ward 11 appealed to the Mayor to sanction a children’s park in his ward in the heart of the city. “Even though a children’s park was sanctioned for my ward in 2019, work was never started and the funds allocated was diverted to some other work. Hence, the Corporation should release funds again for creating the children’s park in my ward,” Mr. Kandan said.
