Colaco’s spectacular strike wins it for Mohun Bagan
Mohun Bagan Super Giant tightened its grip on top of the standings as it beat Bengaluru FC by a solitary goal in the ISL at the Salt Lake Stadium here on Monday.
Liston Colaco’s spectacular volley in the second half made the difference. Bagan registered its 12th win of the tournament to tally 40 points from 18 matches and opened up a seven-point lead over second-placed FC Goa, which has played a match less.
Bengaluru has 28 points from 18 matches and remains in third spot.
Bengaluru controlled the pace of the action for a greater part of the opening session with captain Sunil Chhetri having two good opportunities.
The first chance for Chhetri came in the 18th minute when he tried a shot on the turn just to see his effort going inches wide. Bengaluru did well on the flanks and found route to the Bagan box with greater regularity.
Chhetri had another fine opportunity in the first half injury-time but he failed to hit the target yet again.
The Bengaluru defence maintained its shape and held off the Bagan attacks which were relatively few in numbers.
