
Cambridge: 5 candidates vie for seat in Ontario election

As Cambridge voters decide who to cast a ballot for, they have a number of experienced candidates who are in the running in this provincial election.
The candidates in Cambridge are (in alphabetical order by last name):
Rob Deutschmann, the Liberal candidate, is a personal injury lawyer. He was, until recently, a Region of Waterloo councillor. He resigned that seat to run in this election. He has also served as mayor of North Dumfries from 2010 to 2014.
Carla Johnson, the Green candidate, is a former school teacher and is currently a trustee with the Waterloo Region District School Board. She ran as the Green candidate in 2022.
Belinda Karahalios is the co-founder of the New Blue Party of Ontario. She's the former MPP for Cambridge. She won her seat in 2018 as a member of the Progressive Conservatives, but was removed from the PC caucus in July 2020. In the 2022 provincial election as a member of the New Blue party, she finished fourth with 11 per cent of the ballots.
Marjorie Knight, the NDP candidate, is a family outreach worker with the House of Friendship in Cambridge. She also helped to found Rhythm and Blues Cambridge. She ran as the NDP candidate in the 2018 and the 2022 provincial elections.
Brian Riddell, the Progressive Conservative candidate, is the most recent MPP for Cambridge. Prior to winning the 2022 election, Riddell was a creative industries professor at Conestoga College and had also worked in the private sector.
Cambridge has been a riding since 1975. The first Member of the Provincial Parliament for the area was Montgomery "Monty" Davidson, a member of the NDP, who served until 1981.
William "Bill" Barlow, a Progressive Conservative, served the riding from 1981 to 1987. He was followed by Mike Farnan, a member of the New Democratic Party, who served as the riding's MPP from 1987 to 1995.
The riding went to the Progressive Conservatives from 1995 to 2014. Gerry Martiniuk was the MPP until 2011 and Rob Leone was the MPP until 2014. In 2014, Liberal Kathryn McGarry won the seat and held it for one term.
McGarry lost her seat to PC candidate Belinda Karahalios in 2018. Karahalios was removed from the PC caucus during her term and ran in the 2022 provincial election as a candidate for a party she helped to form called the New Blue Party of Ontario.
Karahalios lost her seat in the 2022 election when PC candidate Brian Riddell won.
