Marking the beginning of the Communist Party of India (Marxist)’s 24th party congress at Tamukkam Grounds here on Wednesday, a party flag brought from Keezhvenmani in Nagapattinam district was hoisted by veteran leader Biman Basu.
Party cadre, clad in red and khaki uniforms, in a procession accompanied CPI(M) Central Committee member U. Vasuki, who carried the flag and handed it over to senior leader A.K. Padmanabhan. Mr. Padmanabhan, in turn, gave it to Mr. Basu, who hoisted it.
Amidst slogans praising the martyrs of the Keezhvenmani massacre, the party flag was hoisted and balloons in red and white were released in the air by the cadre.
Other Left party leaders, including Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Prakash Karat, former Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, D. Raja (CPI), State secretary of the CPI (M) P. Shanmugam, Polit Bureau member Brinda Karat and former State secretary K. Balakrishnan, accompanied Mr. Basu during the flag hoisting event.
Next to the stage, where the flag was hoisted, a 10-foot-tall artwork depicting faces on a pole had been erected. The faces, the leaders said, depicted the 44 Dalit lives that were lost to the atrocities committed by caste Hindus.
Party cadre from other States too recollected the tragic incident by clicking photographs along with the artwork.
The leaders said the flag and the artwork were to signify the struggles of the Communists, who stood along with the people of the working classes and the oppressed communities in fighting injustice.
