The swim team from Sir Frederick Banting Secondary School swept the competition at the 2024 Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) Swimming Championships, beating out all other highschools across Ontario.
The Banting Broncos brought home four gold, four silver and five bronze medals to become the OFSAA champions, which took place on March 5 and 6 at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Complex in Scarborough, Ont.
"They did amazing. They swam personal best times, they improved their times," said Kara Nolan, who coaches the Broncos swim team along with Andrea Maxwell.
The Broncos won the Open Boys Division, the Open Girls Division, and the Overall Combined Team competition.
"It's the first time actually that [in] 25 years, we won the championship — the overall combined division, we won banners — but we just have not won overall combined. So that's pretty amazing," said Nolan.
The team trains at the Canada Games Aquatic Centre, with some of the competitors training up to 20 hours a week.
The OFSAA Swimming Championship saw 341 schools, including 3,150 athletes, compete this year.
