Babu Jagjivan Ram’s services remembered on his birth anniversary

Remembering the legacy of Babu Jagjivan Ram, a social reformer who fought for social justice and empowerment.
On the occasion of the 118th birth anniversary of former Deputy Prime Minister Babu Jagjivan Ram, the services of the social reformer were remembered by many people across SPSR Nellore, Tirupati, Prakasam and Kadapa districts on Saturday.
Nellore District Collector O. Anand said, “Babu Jagjivan Ram had overcome many insults and difficulties in his life. He fought for social justice in the country and worked tirelessly for the upliftment of the weaker sections. All of us should take him as a role model to achieve our rights.” The Collector added that efforts are being made for the upliftment of SCs and STs in the district.
In another event, Nellore Superintendent of Police (SP) G. Krishnakanth paid floral tributes to Jagjivan Ram and lauded him as a great visionary who had put an end to untouchability in the country and united all the people. “Jagjivan Ram is the father of Meira Kumar, the first woman Speaker of Lok Sabha. He was a beacon of hope for the people. He was a great statesman and administrator. People very affectionately used to call him Babuji,” the SP said.
Tirupati District Collector S. Venkateswar said that the life of Jagjivan Ram is memorable and exemplary. Along with local MLA Arani Srinivasulu, Municipal Corporation Commissioner N. Maurya and other public representatives, he paid tributes to the social activist.
Similarly, Prakasam District Collector A. Thameem Ansaria remembered Jagjivan Ram as a great leader who fought for social justice and empowerment. She paid floral tributes to his statues at Ongole-Nellore bus stand centre and the Collector’s office to commemorate his birth anniversary. Santhanuthalapadu MLA B.N. Vijaya Kumar, Ongole Mayor G. Sujatha and leaders of various Dalit organisations also paid tributes. On the occasion, Ms. Ansaria said that Jagjivan Ram’s role in the development of the country was immeasurable.
In a separate event, Prakasam SP A.R. Damodar remembered the struggles of Jagjivan Ram for the freedom of the country as well as equal rights to the poor and downtrodden. His role was crucial in including the term ‘social justice’ in Indian Constitution.
Praising the services of the former Deputy PM, Kadapa District SP E.G. Ashok Kumar said, “Born at Chandwa, Bihar, in 1908, Jagjivan Ram excelled in education. His experiences inspired him to fight for the rights of backward classes.”
