Cape Breton Regional Police say one person is dead after an early morning shooting in Whitney Pier, N.S., but have not disclosed the age or gender of the victim.
In a statement issued Saturday morning, police say they were called to a home in the Shore Road area after gun shots were heard.
Police say a male fled the scene, as well as a white truck.
Police say they tried to stop the vehicle, but were unsuccessful. Three people inside the vehicle then fled into a wooded area.
An emergency alert was issued shortly before 3 a.m. AT to locate the suspects.
Police say the emergency response team, two canine units, a drone unit and other police officers searched for the suspects, who were later arrested at an apartment complex.
It's unclear where this apartment was located.
Coun. Kim Sheppard-Campbell, whose district includes Whitney Pier, said she and her husband were awakened by the emergency alert.
"My husband had heard some noise, he thought it was some fireworks going off in the area," said Sheppard-Campbell. "We never for once thought it would be a shooting."
She lives a street away from where the shooting took place.
"I find Whitney Pier to be one of the safest places around and now the community is going to be shook up over this, for sure," said Sheppard-Campbell.
