Improved access to popular Lord Muruga shrines in Tiruvallur district with new roads proposed for devotees' convenience.
Devotees will soon be able to get better access to two very popular shrines dedicated to Lord Muruga in Tiruvallur district. Minister for Highways E. V. Velu, who visited the Tiruttani Subramanyaswami temple on Wednesday where a proposal for a new road is being actively pursued, said that the tenders for the project are likely to be called by February.
He said that the process for getting land from the Forest Department was under process and two-times the land required will be handed over to them for afforestation. The Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department wanted the road to be completed by December and was ready to deposit Rs. 55 crore for forming a 2 km long road, Mr. Velu added.
HR&CE Minister P. K. Sekarbabu, who was present during the inspection, said that the temple gets really crowded on Tuesdays and Saturdays and that the present road is being used like a one-way. “They allow vehicles in one direction while stopping motorists from the other direction. This creates a lot of tension. If the new road is formed, devotees from Andhra Pradesh can use that one.”
As far as the Balasubramanyaswami temple at Siruvapuri is concerned, Mr. Velu said efforts would be made to widen the present road. Minister S. M. Nasar said that the width of the road leading to that temple was very narrow in several stretches. During festival days and Tuesdays, it got very crowded, he added. Secretary HR&CE B. Chandra Mohan was also present during the inspection.
