Women’s panel writes to Telangana police over increasing crimes against women, seeks report

The National Commission for Women wrote to the Director General of Police, Telangana, over the increasing incidences of heinous crimes against women in the state.
Expressing concern over the increasing rate of heinous crimes against girls and women in the Hyderabad district of Telangana, the National Commission for Women wrote to the Director General of Police, Telangana, to initiate action in this matter.
The NCW Chairperson, Rekha Sharma, in her letter requested the DGP, Telangana to send a report detailing the steps taken by the state to ensure the safety and security of girls and women, so that such incidences can be prevented in future, within seven days.
A copy of the letter has also been sent to the Commissioner of Police, Hyderabad.
The NCW, in its statement, said that it had come across an article that reported five cases of rape against minor girls in Hyderabad in a week.
Two more incidents of rape involving minors were reported in Hyderabad on Monday, the fifth in a week, the article had stated.
NCW said, “The Commission has taken serious note of the increasing rate of heinous crimes against girls and women in Hyderabad district of Telangana. The role of police is not only to protect and prevent crimes, but also to take swift and appropriate action in such matters. Therefore, the Commission has taken cognizance of the matter.”
A 17-year-old girl, who went to a club for a party, was allegedly gang-raped by five people inside a car on Saturday, May 28.
