Leader of Opposition Shehbaz Sharif, touted as the next prime minister of Pakistan, said the new government will not go after political opponents, but assured that the law would take its course.
With Pakistan’s National Assembly voting to oust Imran Khan, Leader of Opposition and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Shehbaz Sharif is poised to be the next prime minister of the country.
After Imran Khan’s removal as prime minister in the wee hours of Sunday, Shehbaz Sharif took to Twitter to address his countrymen and said Pakistan had emerged from a serious crisis after the dramatic events that unfolded last night.
“The country and the House of Parliament was finally freed from a serious crisis last night. Congratulations to the Pakistani nation on a new dawn,” Sharif tweeted.
He also promised that there would be no reprisals against political opponents under the new government, though stating that the law would take its course.
“We will not take revenge on anyone, we will not do injustice to anyone and we will not put anyone in jail, the law will take its own path,” Sharif added.
Pakistan’s National Assembly will reconvene on Monday, April 11, at 2 pm to elect the new PM after Imran Khan was removed from office through a no-confidence motion. The combined Opposition has already named PML-N president Shehbaz Sharif as joint candidate.
No prime minister in Pakistan's history was ever ousted through a no-confidence motion. Cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan is the first premier whose fate was decided through a trust vote.
