A wild elephant attacked and trampled a forest guard who was trying to chase it back into the forest on Monday in the Dithipalayam village next to Perur in the Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu.
The elephant strayed from its path after a herd of 5 wild elephants had entered the town on the night of June 12 and damaged the bananas planted in a private garden.
The incident took place when close to 30 forest officers were engaged in the task of chasing the elephants back into the forest.
One of the Madukkarai forest guards, identified as Nagaraj, was pushed and trampled by an elephant while he was trying to chase the wild animal. The entire incident was recorded by a localite who was standing on the terrace of a house nearby.
Nagaraj is currently undergoing treatment at the Coimbatore Government Hospital.
The elephants usually take refuge in the town or in the gardens during peak summer days and return to the wild at night.
