Why Tim Scott is a low-key 2024 favorite

The announcement on Thursday night that Tim Scott has been chosen to deliver the Republican response to President Joe Biden's address to a joint session of Congress next Wednesday ensures that the South Carolina senator will get a big moment in the national spotlight even as his party continues to wrestle with its future direction and leaders.
"Honored to have this opportunity," tweeted Scott after the news broke. "I'm as confident as I've ever been in the promise and potential of America and look forward to sharing my vision for our nation with all of you." Scott, the lone Black Republican in the Senate, has been viewed as a rising star within the party since he won a House seat in 2010, beating the son of the late South Carolina Sen. Strom Thurmond (R) in the GOP primary. Three years later, Scott was appointed to the Senate by then-South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley following the resignation of Jim DeMint (R).
Andrew Cuomo and Zohran Mamdani bitterly clashed over age and experience Thursday in the final debate before New York City’s Democratic mayoral primary, as Cuomo warned that electing the progressive state assemblyman is unprepared for the job and Mamdani hammered the former governor over scandals during his time in Albany.

On Wednesday, the Department of Homeland Security posted a striking graphic on its official X account. Uncle Sam, a symbol of American patriotism, is depicted nailing a poster to a wall that reads, “Help your country… and yourself.” Written underneath the poster is the sentence, “REPORT ALL FOREIGN INVADERS,” and the Immigration and Customs Enforcement hot line.
