WHO chief warns 'variants are currently winning the race against vaccines' as Delta spreads

On the same day that the world reached the grim milestone of 4 million COVID-19 deaths, World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned that variants are causing a “wave of death” in some parts of the world with less access to vaccines.

Ghebreyesus called on economic leaders of the Group of 20 countries, who are set to meet this week, to work together on getting vaccines and other health tools to less developed countries.  "Vaccine nationalism, where a handful of nations have taken the lion's share, is morally indefensible," Ghebreyesus said Wednesday. "At this stage in the pandemic, the fact that millions of health and care workers have still not been vaccinated is abhorrent."
