Charlotte Alice Bolton held off for a few days in order to become Hamilton's first baby of 2022.
She was due Dec. 29, but arrived at 12:33 a.m. on New Year's Day.
First-time parents Dr. Hannah Geddie and John Bolton had joked about their baby being born on New Year's Day, but said the development left them "definitely surprised," according to a media release from St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton.
Charlotte weighs seven pounds six ounces.
The hospital said her family is "excited and exhausted," though they're limiting their celebrations to some "much-needed sleep."
Eleven families in Niagara welcomed new members on New Year's Day, including Gabrielle Barde who was born at Niagara Health at 7:14 a.m., weighing six pounds four ounces.
Gabrielle is also a first child.
Her parents, Jenny Rose and Michael Laurence Barde, moved to Niagara-on-the-Lake from the Philippines in August.
"We've been married for about three years and thought we couldn't have children. Around the same time we were approved to move to Canada, we were surprised and so excited to find out that we were having a baby," Barde said in a media release from Niagara Health.
"I'm super happy. I was crying in the room too during the delivery. Honestly, we were quite surprised and didn't expect it to be on New Year's Day. It's a memorable day."
Rose added that her water broke almost on the stroke of midnight — coming as a surprise as she was due on Jan. 11.
"Before I gave birth, I was really nervous to deliver the baby, but when I saw her, everything changed," she said. "It's worth the wait and the pain."
