WhatsApp backups on Google Drive may not be unlimited anymore
India Today
WhatsApp will start sending notifications about when Google Drive is almost full when the limit is reached, and information about when the changes take effect.
Google may not provide unlimited storage space for WhatsApp backups. Currently, there is no cap on the size of the media that is stored on Google Drive from WhatsApp, but things may not remain as good as they are now. Google is soon going to put a cap on WhatsApp users on Android. The messaging app is also expected to let users know through notification about when the storage limit is reached.
As per Wabetainfo's report, WhatsApp may soon announce a cap on Google Drive storage. The WhatsApp features tracker may have spotted some important strings that explain how things will change in a future update. WhatsApp will start sending notifications about when Google Drive is almost full, when the limit is reached, and information about when the changes take effect. It does not come as a surprise because Google had earlier stopped offering unlimited storage for Google Photos last year.
In the strings spotted by WhatsApp, Google is expected to offer a certain quota to store WhatsApp backups for free, but it will be a limited plan, and information about the new storage plan is not known. The news should be taken with a pinch of salt as neither Google nor WhatsApp has made an official announcement regarding the same. The information is purely based on the strings that were spotted by the WhatsApp tipster. So it would be better if users take the information with a grain of salt until WhatsApp officially makes an announcement regarding the same.
iPhone users never had the privilege of unlimited storage as WhatsApp backups are a part of their iCloud storage. So far, only Android users can enjoy unlimited Google storage because WhatsApp does not use the Google Drive storage limit available to users. WhatsApp users can expand their storage by buying the Google One plans that start from Rs. 130 a month in India.
On a related note, WhatsApp will soon unveil a standalone app for iPad.WhatsApp head Will Cathcart confirmed during an interview that the Meta-owned messaging app is finally considering a native app for iPad. Users have clamored for an iPad app for the longest time. Many times the traces of WhatsApp working on an iPad app were also spotted by tippers but nothing concrete ever came out of those leaks and rumours. WhatsApp may have halted the process in the past, but now it seems more determined than ever to launch an app for the iPad.
