West Indies vs India, 3rd T20I: Suryakumar Yadav hit a match-winning 76 against West Indies on Tuesday. The Mumbai Indians batter rose to No. 2 in the latest ICC Rankings for men's T20I batters.
India batter Suryakumar Yadav on Wednesday, August 3 said that he wanted to carry on and get the job done for India in their chase of 165 against the West Indies in the 3rd T20I of a 5-match series in St Kitts on Tuesday after captain Rohit Sharma picked up an injury scare and retired hurt as early as the 2nd over.
Suryakumar Yadav, who continued to open with captain Rohit in the absence of KL Rahul, hit a 44-ball 76, smashing 8 fours and 4 sixes as India gunned down the target with an over to spare. Suryakumar flaunted his 360 degree big-hitting skills as he toyed with the West Indies bowling unit.
Suryakumar said he wanted to take responsibility and bat through the innings after seeing Rohit walk back to the dressing room in pain. Suryakumar got good support from Shreyas Iyer, who walked in at No. 3, and Rishabh Pant as the two batters chipped in with 24 and 33, respectively.
"The only thing that was going on in my mind was to keep going on because when I realised Rohit bhai went inside (retired out) so it was important for someone from top three to bat for at least 12-15 overs," Suryakumar told Ishan Kishan in a chat for the BCCI.
Suryakumar Yadav moved to the No. 2 spot in ICC T20I Rankings for batters on Wednesday after a phenomenal few months in the shortest format of the game. The Mumbai Indians batter is just 2 rating points behind Babar Azam, the Pakistan captain who is leading at the top.
Suryakumar has been doing the tough job for India as he has been shuffling up and down the order. In Rahul's absence, Suryakumar has done well at the opening spot against the West Indies in the ongoing series.
Suryakumar hit his maiden T20I hundred in a decider against England earlier in July. Despite all the recent success, the star batter understands the importance of not being complacent.
