India tour of West Indies: Shikhar Dhawan missed out on his 18th ODI hundred by just 3 runs but the captain’s solid knock helped India seal a 3-run win and go 1-0 up in the 3-match series on Friday, July 22.
India captain Shikhar Dhawan conceded that he was a bit disappointed after missing out on a hundred in the first ODI against the West Indies in Port of Spain on Friday, July 22. However, the senior batter said he was happy to contribute to the team’s victory that helped the visitors take a 1-0 lead in the 3-match series.
India held their nerves to seal a 3-run win against a valiant West Indies side that nearly pulled off a record chase. West Indies finished with 305/6, falling short of the target by just 4 runs.
Shikhar Dhawan was the star of India’s victory as the senior batter hit 97 in just 99 balls after West Indies won the toss and opted to bowl.
West Indies vs India, 1st ODI Highlights
Dhawan missed out on his 18th century in ODIs by agonisingly falling for 97 when he tried to get to the 3-figure mark with a boundary against left-arm spinner Gudakesh Moite.
Dhawan’s long wait for an ODI hundred extends as the star batter last went past the 3-figure mark at the 2019 World Cup. Dhawan also missed out on an opportunity to become only the 3rd Indian captain to score an ODI hundred in the West Indies.
“It was disappointing but grateful for 97. I enjoyed it. It was difficult as it was holding a bit and turned. When Shubman, Shreyas and I were batting, we wanted to go big and make it easy for the youngsters,” Dhawan said after India’s victory.
