Waterloo Regional Police Service Deputy Chief Shirley Hilton, who led the region's COVID-19 vaccine distribution task force, will retire this spring, it's been announced.
It comes after 33 years with the service. Hilton began her career in 1990, a media release on Monday said. During her time with the service, Hilton worked in various positions including homicide, drug enforcement, frontline patrol and investigations.
She also served on several provincial and national organizations. Hilton was named acting deputy chief between January and June of 2019, and named deputy chief in 2020.
Hilton said in the release that her years of service "brought many challenges, but also many rewards."
"I am grateful for the many experiences, friendships and fond memories that I have made over the years," she said.
Regional Chair Karen Redman praised Hilton as a "tremendous leader" while police Chief Mark Crowell said Hilton's "passion for public safety and community have been an inspiration to many."
Hilton will retire on May 30, 2023 and the police service board says it will launch a recruitment process for a new deputy chief.
