President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris are addressing the nation Tuesday night, after the jury in the trial of Derek Chauvin found him guilty of murdering George Floyd. The jury found Chauvin guilty on all three charges — second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree unintentional murder and second-degree manslaughter.
Mr. Biden and Harris watched the verdict with their staff in the White House's private dining room. After the verdict was read, Mr. Biden, Harris and First Lady Jill Biden spoke with Philonise Floyd, George Floyd's brother, from the Oval Office, according to the White House. Mr. Biden also spoke with Governor Tim Waltz. Chauvin's bail was immediately revoked, meaning he will spend his time until sentencing in prison. He will be sentenced in eight weeks. In Minnesota, second-degree murder carries a maximum sentence of 40 years in prison. Third-degree murder is punishable by up to 25 years in prison. Second-degree manslaughter is punishable by up to 10 years in prison. The Food and Drug Administration said Wednesday that the U.S. food supply is still "one of the safest in the world," in the wake of a number of foodborne disease outbreaks affecting items ranging from organic carrots to deli meats to McDonald's Quarter Pounders. E. coli, listeria and other contaminants have sickened thousands of people and forced a number of recalls in recent months.
We just had another election with a clear and verifiable victor, overseen by hundreds of thousands of election officials. Those public servants have suffered years of harassment, and despite their successes, are still being accused of taking part in a massive and impossible conspiracy — a conspiracy led by the party out of power to steal an election and cover up all evidence.
