Want to be city councillor for Hamilton's Ward 5? Here's how you get the job
CBC
The City of Hamilton is taking applications from people who want to sit on council until next fall, although winning will require giving a compelling five-minute presentation and convincing the current city council that you're fit for the job.
The city says it's accepting applications for people who want to represent Ward 5 (Centennial) until Nov. 24, 2021. The seat is vacant after long-time councillor Chad Collins was voted in as a Liberal MP for Hamilton East-Stoney Creek.
Interesting applicants need to submit a nomination form, an endorsement of nomination form, a resume/CV and a Freedom of Information and statement of intention form.
Candidates need to submit those forms in person at the clerk's counter on the first floor of Hamilton city hall (71 Main St. W.) The deadline is Oct. 29, and the appointment will be made on Nov. 12, after councillors hear five-minute presentations.
The process is happening instead of a byelection, which some residents preferred instead of an appointment.
The position is open to all qualified electors, although some councillors last week expressed a strong preference for people with "electoral experience," citing the complexity of the job.
Council has done both appointments and byelections in recent years. In 2016, the city held a byelection for Ward 7 for a period of two years.
