Oscars co-host Wanda Sykes has finally opened up on Will Smith and Chris Rock slapgate. The comedian revealed that Chris apologised to her after he was slapped by Will Smith on the stage at Oscars 2022. Wanda Sykes was the host at the 94th Academy Awards alongside Regina Hall and Amy Schumer.
After Amy Schumer, now Wanda Sykes has reacted to the Oscars slapgate incident on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. She called the incident sickening and revealed that Chrish Rock apologised to her at an Oscars afterparty. She said, "The first thing he said was 'I’m so sorry.’”
Wanda revealed when she asked Chris why he was apologising, he said, "It was supposed to be your night. You and Amy and Regina, y’all were doing such a great job. I’m so sorry. This is now going to be about this."
During the awards ceremony, Will walked up to the stage and punched Chris for making fun of his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith's baldness. This incident overshadowed everything else at the Oscars.
Recalling the incident, Wands said, “It was sickening. I physically felt ill, and I’m still a little traumatized by it.”
She was not happy with the Academy not taking any action against Will Smith after he slapped Chris Rock. She added, “And for them to let him stay in that room and enjoy the rest of the show and accept his award, I was like, ‘How gross is this? This is just the wrong message.’” Will Smith won The Best Actor Oscar for King Richard.
Wanda Sykes spoke about Will Smith apologising to Chris but also pointed out that no one yet has apologised to her and her co-hosts, who had worked hard to put the show together. She said, "No one has apologised to us."
