V.O. Chidambaranar port sees 7% increase in container handling, aiming to become a leading hub on India's east coast.
V.O. Chidambaranar port has recorded a steady 7% increase in container handling compared to the last financial year.
A statement from V.O.C. Port authority stated that the port handled 5,81,557 TEU’s in the current financial year up to December compared to the 5,43,531 TEU’s cargo handled during the same period last year.
Over the last decade, the port’s container handling has seen a consistent growth, rising from 5,07,735 TEU’s in 2013-2014 to 7,47,363 TEU’s in 2023-24, reflecting a sustained upward trend.
The port has also ranked first in both the financial years 2022-23 and 2023-24, reinforcing its leadership in container handling efficiency. Additionally, the terminal achieves 30 container moves per hour meeting global standards.
To meet the exponential growth of container traffic the newly proposed outer harbour, for which foundation stone laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi will feature two terminals with quay length of 1 km each, draft of 16.5 metres with a capacity to handle 4 million TEU of container traffic.
Susanta Kumar Purohit, IRSEE, Chairperson of VOC port authority, stated that the port has immense potential to become a leading hub for gateway and transhipment container traffic in India’s east coast.

“Earth Day celebrations have already started in Bengaluru, with campaigns at various colleges such as St. Josephs, and Christ University where life-size elephants made from the invasive species, Lantana Camera, have been travelling to spread the message of conservation and coexistence, along with expert talks from WWF India and Ravi Chellam of Metastring Foundation,” said the release.
