A 17-year-old boy was found dead in his hostel room on Thursday, triggering protest by the students of Visva-Bharati university.
Students of Visva-Bharati university protested outside the Vice Chancellor’s residence after a Class 12 student was found dead in his hostel room in West Bengal’s Birbhum district on Thursday.
A Visva-Bharati official said the student, hailing from Nanur in the same district, was found lying motionless in his hostel room and was taken to Pearson Memorial Hospital at Santiniketan, where the doctors declared him dead. The body was then sent to Bolpur sub-divisional hospital for post-mortem examination.
The incident triggered a protest, with students demanding that the VC should visit the student’s family.
Meanwhile, the 17-year-old student’s father lodged a complaint at Santiniketan Police Station alleging that there was an attempt by the university to suppress facts since his son was murdered. He alleged that the body was hurriedly taken from Pearson Memorial Hospital to another hospital.
Meanwhile, the police officials said that they have received the complaint and are awaiting the post-mortem report.
As students gathered outside the VC’s office in protest, West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar tweeted that the Visva-Bharati university VC had sent an urgent message to Chief Superintendent of Police, citing threat to his life.
The West Bengal Governor tweeted, “VC Vishwa Bharati message sent to CS for intervention “Kindly send security. My life is at risk. The agitators have broken the main gate and an untoward incident is likely to happen if you don't send police protection for me. It is an SOS. Bidyut Chakrabarty” CS response “Sir I have got the information. Have alerted DGP ,DM and SP .Will follow up. Regards.”
