Virudhunagar district administration has warned of stringent action against those manufacturing banned single-use plastic goods, those selling and stocking them and also against those who were strewing such goods in the open space without clearing them properly.

In a statement, Virudhunagar Collector V.P. Jeyaseelan said that single-use plastics were threatening the environment and ruining water and soil resources.
The State government banned manufacture, use and stocking of those goods with effect from January 1, 2019 through a Government Order of July 25, 2018.
The Collector said 65 factories that were illegally manufacturing single-use plastic goods had been closed down in Virudhunagar district by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board. Their power supply was disconnected.
Besides, the commercial establishments that had been selling and stocking the banned plastic goods were continuously raided by local bodies and TNPCB officials. A fine of ₹39.98 lakh had been collected from those shops and commercial establishments 55.39 tonnes of prohibited plastic goods were seized, the Collector added.
