Vir Das, who has been nominated for an International Emmy Award for his Netflix comedy special, talked about the backlash his Two Indias video has received. The monologue has triggered a debate, with many slamming Vir for ‘insulting’ India.
Vir Das is among the few Indian standup comedians who have made their mark on an international level. His Netflix comedy special, Vir Das: For India, has received an International Emmys 2021 nomination also. However, his recent Two Indias monologue has caused an uproar, with many people criticising it for “insulting” India, while others pointed out it was brave. In an exclusive conversation with India Today Television, Vir talked about the controversy.
Vir Das said, "I was just doing a show. We were full, and it was my audience and I wrote a piece." The comedian emphasised that he did not intend to start a conversation with his monologue and any Indian who enjoys satire would get it. "I don't think you ever hope to start a conversation. I think you just hope to make people laugh in the room. Any Indian with a sense of humour, who enjoys satire, and watches my entire video will know that's what happened in my video and will feel love and feel amazing," Vir added.
